2E shoe width: D vs 2E in millimetres

2E (also written EE) is a wide fit in men's shoes and an extra wide in women's. HOKA is the one brand we found that prints it in millimetres: at men's US 9, D is a 100 mm foot and EE a 108 mm foot, 8 mm wider at every size.

D vs 2E at HOKA

These are foot widths from HOKA's own charts, so read them as the foot each width is for rather than the inside of the shoe. HOKA calls the columns Regular, Wide and X-Wide, and says D and EE are its men's medium and wide.

The step is 12 mm from regular to X-Wide. Going up half a size in regular adds only 1 mm of width at HOKA, so wide and half a size up are different changes. HOKA's rule of thumb gives nearly the same answer as its table: Divide foot length by width: medium widths are about 2.65 to 1, wide widths closer to 2.45 to 1. Source. For a 26.4 cm foot, 264 ÷ 2.45 = 107.8 mm, against 108 mm printed.

2E in women's shoes

The letters move. HOKA's women's medium is B and its wide is D: at US 8 that is 93 and 99 mm, a difference of 6 mm. So a women's D is a wide fit, and a men's D is the standard one.

Florsheim prints a width for each size too, for medium (M or D) and wide (W or 3E): 4 mm apart at every size below. That is D against 3E, not 2E, and Florsheim does not say whether it measures the foot or the shoe, so do not set these beside HOKA's figures.
